As an artist, I started taking photographs at a later age after I was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. I believe that in many ways the act of "creating" helped me survive the days when I barely had the energy to get out of bed, let alone go out into the world and shoot what I consider simple but “real” images. I have had the opportunity to photograph in many places - from Europe to all over the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Hawaii. I find the power of the ocean to be the tonic needed to keep me going on days when I want to throw in the towel.
My approach is simple, I look at the image through the camera and take the shot, nothing more. I decided, initially, to take three images of a subject, and sometimes fewer. Most of the images in this exhibition were shot with my Nikon D90 or an older Nikon that I used in the beginning. I have been constant in my approach to shoot in RAW format and not Photoshop or alter the image in any way. Often the images I think will be the least interesting turn into a more astonishing picture than I could imagine. I choose to shoot what I see, if it works, great. If it doesn’t meet my standard, well, I just delete the image and move on. The exhibit you are viewing is just a small selection of images I have taken over the past eight years.
