James Florschutz creates mixed media sculptures from the discarded materials of our society. Arts writer Richard Speer in a review of an exhibition from GLEAN, Portland’s Metro Central Transfer Station residency for artists, reminds us that, "in a post-Beuys, post-Oldenburg, post-Kienholz world, to use found, distressed, or just plain ugly materials is no longer déclassé." As a long-time practitioner in the art of sculpture and assemblage, Florschutz sees compositions in discarded materials and seeks to reveal their own language and tell their own stories.
James Florschutz has exhibited his sculpture in solo and group shows across the United States from OK Harris Works of Art and Cynthia-Reeves in NYC to Augen Gallery and Wieden + Kennedy in Portland OR. His work can be found in private and public collections such as Duke Energy in Charlotte, NC and Meditech Corporation in Norwood, MA. Besides many private commissions he has also been commissioned to create public works for the town green in Danville, VT, the Rutland County Courthouse, Rutland, VT, and the Springfield State Office Building in Springfield, VT.
Mr. Florschutz has received numerous awards and honors including grants from Portland’s Regional Art and Culture Commission, Artists Resource Trust Fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, two grants from the Vermont Arts Council and two separate fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT. James received a B.F.A. from Florida International University. He currently lives in Portland, OR where he also maintains a studio.
