* The term vernissage has its origin in the old practice of setting aside a day before an exhibition opening for artists to varnish and put finishing touches to their paintings – a tradition that dates back to 1809, when it was instituted by England’s Royal Academy of Art. Today, the term has become “slang” for the preview or first look event when the paint may still be wet on the artworks. It is advised to refrain from touching the art!
